Santa Muerte is the powerful and mystical Mexican female folk saint of death. She is depicted as a female Grim Reaper. While she is caring, motherly, and generous with her devotees, Santa Muerte is also vindictive or wrathful to those who do not come through on their promises to her, who disrespect her, or who insult and disrespect her children, her loyal devotees. She is very open-minded and will listen to anyone who prays to her—that is, if they treat her properly with the deference she deserves. Santa means “saint” or “holy” in Spanish, while muerte means “death.” Santa Muerte is therefore the folk saint of death; she channels the awesome and holy power that is death. As a devotee, you may also call her, as is done in Mexico, Santísima Muerte, which means “Most Holy Death.” You may choose to use her English name as some devotees do in the US and UK, calling her Saint Death or Holy Death. Santa Muerte does not discriminate against anybody! She welcomes all those who would like to work with her.
It is important that you buy a statue that is charged. When a statue is charged, the manufacturer places what in Spanish is called una carga (a charge) at the base of the statue. This consists of a transparent glazed section, visible to the naked eye, that is loaded with seeds and charms. The carga is essential to any Santa Muerte statue as the charge imbues the statue with power. The seeds, often mustard seeds and others, are from plants that grow fast and are hardy both in their seed and plant form. This charge ensures that your prayers and spells, just like these seeds, will take root fast and grow strong. The charms and symbols bring good luck, protect you from bad energy, and also empower your work with the statue.
